I don’t want your money
I don’t need your pity
I don’t ask for possessions
They mean nothing to me.

I just need your presence
I so want your ear
I desire connections
To placate this fear.

Can’t you be generous?

  1. “Can’t you be generous?” Despite the seemingly personal audience for this poem, i.e. the poem seems to be about a more intimate interpersonal exchange between one seeker and one sought (or possibly several soughts), I ended up thinking about the vicious turn this world has taken lately with the emotional/political warfare over women’s sexuality and bodies, and thinking of how at the base of all lack of generosity is fear, and at the root of all longing is fear. In other words, this poem made me think beyond the lines of it, so thank you.

  2. Thank you so much dfb and Leta. I appreciate you folks reading me. This stems from the fact that people don’t seem to think that giving is a lot more than handing someone something or doing something for someone. It’s about being vulnerable and humble and just accessible and available.

Being truly in the moment together. And Leta you’re right in your example. A lack of this type of generosity is indeed fear. You really made me think here πŸ™‚ In our current tough times it seems folks are being very protective and don’t want to show who they are. And want to attack and malign others.

I don’t like that hehh (laughter as defense mechanism) πŸ™‚
